Sense of Self is a new inclusive bathhouse in a converted Collingwood warehouse in Melbourne. It is a collaboration between Setsquare Studio, Chamberlain Architects and Hearth Studio. The bath house comprises of; a large mineral bath, Hammam Steam room, Finnish sauna, light-filled vegetated courtyard and a cold plunge pool.

The clients came to us with a strong and clear vision for their brand. They wanted to redefine the wellness experience with an inclusive model for self-care. They wanted a bathing experience that wasn’t focused on self-improvement or beauty, but instead valued community, acceptance and genuine restoration.

The design team converted this clear vision into a spatial experience. To invite restoration and a reset from daily life, we used contrasting levels of lighting and colour, dramatically varied ceiling heights and theatrical framed views of water and water sources, creating a rich procession and sense of ritual outside of the everyday.

The space was designed for every ‘body’. We implemented all gender toilets and change cubicles and designed for accessible communal bathing with a variety of entry options to suit varying abilities.

We resolved these design aspirations whilst simultaneously addressing the pragmatic needs of safety, durability, buildability, thermal comfort and accessibility. We played an active role in resolving operations to ensure efficient and seamless day to day running for what was, a unique and unprecedented inner-city bathhouse operation.

The brief for SOS was to create an empathetic space that engaged in a new idea of well-being – community, acceptance and restoration. An immersive environment that encourages healing, rest and connection.
